Colleges and educational institutions without full-time principals can heave a sigh of relief after the Supreme Court on Monday set aside the order of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court de-recognising these institutes.

The apex court’s order is going to benefit many colleges and educational institutions in the state, including 347 colleges and 132 institutes affiliated to the University of Pune spread over Ahmednagar, Nashik and Pune districts.

The president of the state principals’ forum, Nandkumar Nikam said, “The apex court has directed the state government and varsities to fill up the vacant posts of principals with full-time appointments. The admission processes of students in such colleges should not be stalled.”

The high court’s Nagpur bench, in its order on December 3, 2008, had directed that the colleges and institutes that do not have qualified and full-time principals should be disaffiliated.

Even the apex court had passed an order on December 29, 2008, that all colleges in the state, irrespective of whether they are technical or not, must have full-time principals with proper qualifications by May 31, 2010. It had debarred such colleges from admitting students for the academic year 2010-11, if the posts of regular principals are not filled up.

However, several colleges had approached the Supreme Court
appealing on its earlier verdict.
