Sikandar Singh, a junior college student of St Xavier’s College near Marine Linescannot wait for the degree college to start.

Being the first batch of students who will study in a new system of the now-autonomous college, he, like many others, is naturally excited.

“We’ll be the first incoming batch, and I feel really lucky. We’ll have a world-class curriculum and even our co-curricular and extra-curricular activities will have a lot of importance,” said Singh.

St Xavier’s College has become the first affiliated college under Mumbai University to become autonomous, and congratulations have been pouring in. “I received many emails and messages from faculty stating “at last” (we’ve become autonomous).

Students are happy and many even said they want to start again from the first year,” said Father Frazer Mascarenhas, principal.

VN Magare, director of the board of college and university development, said Mumbai University will issue a notification in a day or two declaring that Xavier’s has been granted autonomy.

Even those students not affected by the development, whose classes will resume on Monday, are looking forward to a more ‘liberated’ institute. “I wish I could go back to first year,” said Mridula Chari a third-year student of the college.

Romit Mehta, another student, said that the autonomy will not just be challenging for the faculty and students, but will do wonders for the college profile. “We’ve been to international programmes and have noticed how the credit and semester pattern gives students the freedom to be more creative and innovative, unlike our system, which limits our options,” said Mehta.

“An inter-disciplinary curriculum will be fantastic for students and will give them a broader scope of learning. Those who want to pursue further studies abroad will also feel more confident and comfortable with the system there,” he said.

A group of students who had come to college on Friday to brainstorm on Malhar, the annual festival, also could not stop talking about how proud they are.

“There will be no direct impact of the autonomy on second and final year degree students, but that does not mean we are any less excited. We’re looking forward to be part of the change. Our faculty can do a lot more now,” said Sucharita Kanjilal.
