Demand action against colleges not allowing those belonging to backward class to appear for exams.
The Bharatiya Krantikari Sangathana has called for a daylong college bandh on Wednesday to demand action against the colleges not allowing backward class students to sit for exams.
The colleges cite the non-payment of fees as the state government is yet to disburse the freeship money.
Sangathana president Siddharth Sharma said the bandh call was given after the social welfare department (SWD) failed to act despite his going on a four-day hunger strike. However, he promised to hold the agitation in a peaceful manner, without disturbing the board examinations.
The affected students belong to Scheduled Castes (SC), Schedule Tribes (ST), nomadic tribes, other backward classes (OBC) and special backward classes (SBC) from at least five city colleges, Sharma claimed.
Modern College of Science, Commerce and Arts principal, Sanjay Kharat said, “Our college has not denied permission to any student to appear for the examination. They might not have received the hall ticket as they may have failed to fill the online form. Yet, all students are allowed to appear for the exam. To the best of my knowledge, the SWD disbursed the money till last year.”
Sir Parshurambhau College principal, Dileep Sheth said, “Nobody has been denied permission to write the examination. The SWD will check the online registrations for freeship before releasing the money this year. The examination is in April and there is still time in our hands.”
The government resolution issued in 2004 says that colleges should not be charging any fees from backward class students, failing which criminal action can be taken against them.
However, directors, joint directors and district head of SWD did not
respond to repeated calls.
