Fed up with the strictness of a professor at a coaching centre, four of the students decided to harass him and teach him a lesson. And in an era of the Internet, they couldn’t have thought of anything other than using the social network to realise their goal.
So, the four boys belonging  to reputed families, who were students at the centre to prepare for their engineering entrance exams, created an obscene Facebook (FB) profile of the professor. But once the boys were traced, the professor withdrew his complaint to save them from trouble.

While the father of one of the boys is the vice president of a multi-national firm, another is son of a retired senior police inspector, the third is son of a known city-based doctor and father of the fourth student runs a reputed NGO in the city, police sources said.

According to the police sources, a few weeks ago, the professor of a Dadar-based private tuition classes had lodged a complaint against unknown persons for creating a fake and obscene profile of his on FB.
“The professor was not on FB and learned only through his friends and relatives about the fake FB profile which had his photo, following which he lodged the complaint,” said an officer from Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC).

The crime branch team, led by police inspector Mukund Pawar made inquiries in the said complaint and recently they traced the Internet Protocol addresses from where the profile was created and comments were posted. The  IP address was traced to the computer of one of the boys who were enrolled at the same coaching class where the professor teaches.

The students, all aged around 17years, had given their 12th standard exams and were preparing for engineering entrance exams.

“The boys initially passed the buck on each other but later admitted creating the profile. The professor in question is very strict and the boys were upset because of this, so they decided to harass him by creating fake FB profile and defaming him,” the officer said.

He added that the parents  of all four students requested the professor to not go ahead with the police action as this would spoil the careers of the children, following which the professor withdrew his complaint.

“This was yet another case wherein the culprit turned out to be a known person and the complaint was withdrawn. It was a kind gesture from the professor to not proceed with the case,” the officer said, adding that the boys were then let off after a warning and the said FB profile was then deleted.

“Children are unaware about the crimes on cyber space which they commit unknowingly. They should make use of cyber space for a better cause and not for mischief,” said joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy.
