The Sterling theatre in South Mumbai is all set to reopen as a plush three-screen multiplex this Friday, after it closed down for renovations almost a year ago. With 12 daily shows, an online booking facility and a food court, the Sterling Cineplex is all geared to attract audiences to its upscale interiors.

The newly refurbished Sterling also boasts of being the first cinema complex in India to have THX Certified cinema, a technology designed to recreate the acoustics and ambience of a movie studio.

“We are opening with Spiderman 3 and Yatra,” said Kaizad Mistry, the general manager. However, before the general public sees Spiderman weave his web or Rekha’s mesmerizing courtesan act, Sterling will host a cocktail party and a private screening for some of its valued patrons. “We will be back with a bang,” Mistry promises.

The Cineplex also held a pre-launch screening of several short films on Monday, a move considered to be ‘very heartening’ by independent filmmakers. “It is rare for theatres to give a platform to short films and we hope that this association will be carried forward,” said Ramesh Kode, the director of Haqeeqat a short film shown at the event.

Sterling, known to be the pioneer of several trends in movie watching, was also the first theatre in the country to have severed caramel popcorn to its audiences besides starting the trend of matinee and late night shows.

Little wonder that since opened in 1969, Sterling has been the first choice for film buffs. “I have had some great times with friends while sitting on the steps outside the theatre before and after the shows,” says collegian Minal Shah.
