State education mela: Fun way to learn

In an attempt to make learning fun, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) will be holding an education mela across government-aided schools in the state for students studying between 5th and 7th standard in February.

From making scientific toys, learning physics through sporting races to how to change a flat tyre, the students will participate in activities relevant to the curriculum of math, science, languages and arts and crafts. The three-day education fair will seek to promote learning through fun-based activities and make students confident in self-learning. Special training will also be imparted to teachers and resource persons in preparing for the activities.

‘’We want this fair to be a fun way to learn. Usually, students are bogged down by books and stuck in a classroom. The fair is a chance to stimulate their imagination,’’ said V Radha, head, SSA and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

The fair will have a Science Mela, where students and teachers can perform experiments; a Math Mela which will have number games and other creative activities such as calligraphy, paperwork, clay work, painting, yoga, musicals and films. 

Schools will have to choose around 12 activities per subject and every activity will teach students concepts from the curriculum. The state has roped in reputed science and math organisations to partner this project. In a meeting of the organising committee on Tuesday, Vijaysheela Sardesai, currently the co-ordinator of the SSA and RMSA said: “Such activities will help students grasp complex concepts.”
