The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has directed the state government to compensate the victims of the Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS)-led violence in October 2008.
The commission has asked the state to compensate the persons who suffered damage and loss of property during the violence unleashed by the MNS party members, by December 30.
As per figures provided by the government, the violence led to a loss and damage of 60 taxis, 37 auto rickshaws, 91 public buses, 13 private vehicles and seven other immovable properties in Dombivli, Bhandup and Badlapur. The government, however, has estimated a loss worth just Rs8 lakh. The state is also yet to ascertain the number of people who were adversely affected by the violent mob.
Farukh Ghosi, a Samajwadi Party activist, had filed a complaint with the MSHRC in October 2008, stating that the failure of the government and the police to protect the citizens from the MNS atrocity amounted to a violation of the citizens’ rights.
