The D-day for SSC students has finally arrived. The fate of over 16 lakh students will be decided at 1pm today, when the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will declare the results for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination held in March this year.

Despite the results being declared according to the ‘best of five’ policy and students with sports achievements receiving 25 grace marks, anxiety levels are high amongst the students and parents. Reason?

Most of the parents feel that since the SC order last year has given a choice to ICSE and CBSE board students to follow best of five as well; there will be cut-throat competition amongst students this year too.

“College cut-offs will surely touch the skies. Soon, we might have a similar situation like Delhi, where degree colleges had a 100% cut-off. State students are naturally worried because the new policy is not actually giving them any edge. There will be many students scoring in 100s this year too. This is adding to woes of the parents and children,” said TA Shiware, principal, KPB Hinduja College, Charni Road.

Counsellors and helplines were flooded with calls from parents and children who are eagerly awaiting the results over the admission process into junior college. According to counsellors, it is the high expectations for their child that leads to increase in anxiety among parents.

“Most parents have expectations from their children which are not practical. Parents should expect according to the ability of their child, which will reduce the nervousness and stress,” said a counsellor. Counsellors also warn parents not to pressurise children and pass on their stress and expectation to the children.

Some parents have also taken an off on the day of the results. “I will not be able to concentrate at work until the results are declared. So, I have decided to be at home,” said Kiran Das, a parent, adding that though her son is relaxed, she would want to help him with the admissions.
