These days in the city, one often sees advertisements screaming from autorickshaw hoods urging you to try out one product or another. But the same vehicle can be used to spread an equally profound message is what the members of this mobile library, based out of Wakdewadi, realised.

A message intelligently interwoven with the daily life of the common man is more likely to have an impact. It is with this belief that a group of 10 members and 40 volunteers of Pune-based Sandesh Library began an initiative to spread the message of preventing female foeticide that is a grave issue today.

What better tool to reach out to the common man than the ubiquitous autorickshaw? Keeping this in mind, the library members came up with an idea of designing an innovative poster with the message and putting it up on an autorickshaw.

What is interesting is that the library members wish to go beyond being just a regular library that deals with books — they believe in spreading knowledge through these endeavours. Sandesh library is a mobile library and consists of books related to various religions and also literature. The library was formed two and a half years ago to reach out to the masses.

The poster gives out a message that female foeticide is banned in the Quran and this message should be taken up by other communities too.

Giving an insight about the same, Nisar Ahmed, one of the members of the library, said, “We promote science through Quran, the holy book of Islam. In Quran it is mentioned that a girl child is as precious as the male child and should be treated equally. In India the male female ratio is declining.

“To save the girl child, we are promoting this message through various means such as putting up posters on autorickshaws that travel all over the city and spread the message. Soon we will be conducting workshops in schools as well.”

Besides that, the mobile library has so far carried out many such programmes where they have promoted the connection between science and Quran through exhibitions and workshops.

“We have been doing this for free for the last two years,” Ahmed said. Salim Shaikh, also a member and founder of this mobile library, said that besides female foeticide, they are also working on promoting health for senior citizens, counselling stressed out students and fighting for the rights of Islamic women.
