A spoken English course in Goregaon (E) taught to young girls from regional schools is gaining popularity, with NGO Sahyog reporting that the number of girls availing this course has almost doubled since they started teaching them a year ago.
The course, known as Yuva English, aims to enable youth from regional medium schools aged 16-30 to use English to improve their performance in schools, colleges, at the workplace and in social situations. The course is tailored for students with very basic English skills.
Gulnaz Khan, who lives in Dindoshi, has been teaching English for the last 10 years. “When we started this course, we had 25 students. The girls were dropouts or students who needed coaching. This year, we have 40 girls.”
“Many girls have secured jobs as the course helped improve their spoken English,” said Khan. Usually, students acquire jobs at malls and other such places, she added.
The main goal of Yuva English is to empower these girls in their pursuit of higher education and employment, said Moiz Raj Shaikh of Pune-based Centre for Learning Resources (CLR), the designer of the course.
The course helps girls whose families are conservative, said a social worker. “Because this area is not safe, families don’t allow their girls to venture too far, so this course being taught here is perfect for them,” she added.
Saba Khan, 19, who lives in a nearby slum in Dindoshi, is attending the classes to be a teacher. “Here, I’ve learnt not only English, but also how to operate a computer. This will help me secure a job,” she said.
