To keep pace with the changing times, the city police top brass has decided to start spoken English lessons for policemen, to enhance their language skills and help them communicate better with people.

To keep pace with the changing times, the city police top brass has decided to start spoken English lessons for policemen, both constables and officers, to enhance their language skills and help them communicate better with people.
The classes will be conducted at the Pune commissonerate from August this year. According to police sources, each class will have about 25 constables and will be held every day for two hours and will last for a month.
The sources told DNA that external tutors would teach the policemen conversational English and the ability to frame appropriate questions.
A senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer attached to the commisionerate said, “The concept was born when we began receiving complaints of miscommunication and rude behaviour of our policemen from citizens.’’
Every police station in the commissionerate has been asked to send a list of aspirants to the Pune administration department.
Assistant commissioner of police Vasant Sonawane (administration) told DNA, “There will be 25 policemen in each batch, so that personal attention can be given by the tutor.”
Sixty constables in the Pune police commissionerate are post-graduates, 500 constables are graduates. Another 153 policemen have taken admission to the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University; 75 constables will be studying BA in police administration; and 78 policemen have registered for a two-year MBA course in public policy and management.
