Unhappy with the pace of investigation, the state CID has set a deadline of six months for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to complete the probe into the alleged custodial death of Sayed Khwaja Yunus Sayed Ayub. The SIT, headed by inspector general Rajnish Seth, was formed by CID about a month ago.

Additional director general of police (CID) SPS Yadav told DNA that CID wants to expedite the case and ensure that it reaches a logical conclusion. “There has been no progress for years together. So, we want the SIT to complete the probe within six months,” Yadav added.

After the Ghatkopar bomb blast in December 2002,the Mumbai police nabbed Yunus, a software engineer who was working in Dubai. He had returned to his hometown Parbhani in November 2002. Mumbai police allegedly tortured him in custody following which he died in January 2003. However, the Mumbai police said the vehicle that was taking Yunus to Aurangabad met with an accident at Parner in Ahmednagar and Yunus gave the police a slip. He has been untraceable since then.

The CID had registered a case of the alleged custodial death at Ghatkorpar in January 2003. During the initial course of investigation, the CID claimed that Yunus was murdered in police custody.

After registering a complaint, CID had booked 14 policemen in the case. These cops were either suspended or transferred from the jurisdiction of the Mumbai police commissionerate.
