Nobody has touched the Marathi literary heart as playwright Vasant Kanetkar. Be it an issue of morality or love, his writings have touched several emotional chords for generations.

To pay tribute to the legend and give audiences a chance to revisit his plays, Swarananda Pratishthan will hold a special programme on Kanetkar’s 90th birth anniversary at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha on March 20 at 4.30 pm.

Prakash Bhonde, the event’s producer said, “Kanetkar was a thinker, teacher, scholar and a great writer. He has written over 40 plays. Generations of actors and technicians have built their careers and made a livelihood out of his plays. Theatre groups such as Chandralekha, Natya Sampadha, The Goa Hindu Association and Progressive Drama Association have survived and progressed on his plays. We will be holding the event to pay tribute to the legend.”

The event would begin with an audio-visual show where clippings of the famous plays of Kanetkar would be shown.

“The old plays such as Vedyache Ghar Unhat, Ashrunchi Jhali Phule, Raigadala Jewha Jag Yete, Himalayachi Sawali’s clippings will be screened,” Bhonde said. Clippings of interviews of Vijaya Mehta, Sriram Lagoo, Vandana Gupte, Shrikant Moghe and Raj Dutt would also be shown.

Scenes from various other plays such as Prema, Tujha Ranga Kasa, Akhercha Saval and Suryachi Pillay, among others, would be enacted by artistes.

“Upcoming artistes such as Amruta Satbhai, Ravindra Khare, Radhika Deshpande, Shrikant Bhide, Avinash Ogale and Leena Gogate will perform,” he added.

There would also so be a Natya Sangeet performance by Raghunath Palshikar and Shaunak Abhisheki. A unique feature of the show would be that it will be held in a natisutradhar style or anchoring in the form of a dialogue. Eminent cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar’s works will also be displayed. The same event will be held in Mumbai on March 25 and Nashik on March 27.
