The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will use three special cameras to detect water leakages in the supply pipelines and top priority will be given to repair leakages to avoid any loss of water.

The decision was announced in the standing committee meeting of BMC on Wednesday. “There have been complaints from a number of corporators about the leakages in pipelines and the contaminated water supply. We have three cameras at the BMC headquarter, which will be used to detect the leakages in the pipelines,” said Rahul Shewale, chairman, standing committee. These cameras will also be used to find the source where contaminated water mixes in the pipeline, he added.

Shewale also added that, a contractor will be deployed and he will use these cameras. “Whenever we receive a complaint about contaminated water or leakage, the cameras will be taken to the site to detect the problem,” said Shewale.

Shiv Sena corporator Ravindra Waikar demanded that the BMC should allot a camera to each and every zone of the city, since every part of the city is facing problems of water loss and contamination. “There are few financial problems because of which this demand can’t be completed,” said Shewale.

The water pipelines of BMC are more than 80 years old. Most of them are in extremely bad condition, resulting in frequent bursts and the subsequent leakages. The city is already gripping under the water shortages. The city receives 3,400 million litres per day (mld) against demand of 3,600 mld. More than 20% of the city’s water gets wasted due to the leakages. Hence, BMC’s new move to use advance technology will come as a big relief to Mumbaikars. BMC’s work of laying out new pipelines had resulted in water cuts in some of the areas of Mumbai, such as Kurla.
