The 42-year-old woman, whose throat was slit with a knife by her friend in Mumbai Central on Monday, has lost her voice.

Shehnaz Alam Mirshaikh was attacked by her friend Sabira Aliraj (45) after an argument between them turned ugly.

The incident took at Shehnaz’s residence located on the 10th floor of Doodhwala Compound in Mumbai Central.

Vinayak Saude, senior police inspector of Nagpada police station, said, “Shehnaz was unconscious for two days and now that she has gained consciousness, she cannot talk as the wound on her neck has probably caused damaged to her vocal chord. However, the doctors have said that they are trying to conduct tests on her to see whether the loss of voice is temporary or permanent. We have not been able to record her statement till now.”

However, the police said that it appeared to be a matter of monetary dispute between the two women.

According to the police, Shehnaz had bought gold ornaments worth Rs5 lakh for Sabira a few moths ago and the latter was to pay back the money. However, Sabira only managed to pay Rs3 lakh and had started buying time to pay the remaining amount. Sabira had again asked Shehnaz to lend her money for her daughter’s marriage. The victim refused saying that she had not yet not paid the money that she had borrowed earlier.

Saude added they have received information that Sabira is going to be attending a relative’s wedding in Bharuch area of Gujarat. “We have dispatched a police team to Gujarat,” said Saude.

Sabira, a beautician, has been charged with attempted murder.
