Anyoha Jessica had planned to spend a fortnight in India, but now her stay in the country may get extended indefinitely. A South African student, Jessica may also not be treated with the usual warmth the tourists get.

Just when Jessica was supposed to board the Ethiopian airlines flight back home to Addis Ababa from the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, custom officials smelt a rat and intercepted her. Their suspicion proved to be true and Jessica was found in possession of morphine.

“She had tried to conceal around 4.426grams of morphine in her suitcase. She was arrested and produced in the court,” said Mahendra Pal, additional commissioner of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU). “She had tried to conceal the morphine in false top and bottom of her suitcase,” added Pal.

Having arrested Jessica early Thursday morning, the agency has now sent the substance found in her possession for further chemical testing to confirm if it is indeed morphine.

“While the crude test indicates that the substance is morphine, we have sent it for further chemical testing for confirmation,” explained Pramod Gawande, commissioner (customs). Presently, there is lack of clarity regarding the source of morphine and the agency will probe further to figure out how and from where did Jessica get the morphine and for what purpose.

Banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances (NDPS) Act, the value of the 4.426 grams of morphine found in Jessica’s possession is estimated to be over Rs40 lakh in the international market. The quantity found in her possession falls under the umbrella of what is considered to be commercial and a person found in possession of commercial quantity can be sentenced to ten years imprisonment.
