Residents of First Pasta Lane Association (FPLA) are planning to keep up with not just security but also the technology used to maintain it. In a move that will help them check up on their area’s security from anywhere in the world, the residents will have closed circuit television (CCTV) images up-linked on the web.

The move is among a series of measures the residents have taken to ensure that the area is well-secured. Citizens have often been troubled by drug addicts, drunkards, defecation in the open, and harassment of the elderly, women and girls.

“There are several issues that have been troubling us for over two years. The move to secure the area started around that time. We used to approach the police, but beyond a point, even they could not help us with anything. We then mooted the idea of setting up CCTVs in our area, which the residents supported,” said Vijay Advani, joint secretary, FPLA.

By this week, the association will have around six to seven CCTVs in different locations of the 40m road. “These will monitor all the activities on the road. Very soon, we will also uplink all of these on the web and talks are almost in the final stage. Residents will be given a user name and password and they can monitor the video from anywhere. For security inside the buildings, we have individual guards, who keep a tab of who is going in and getting out,” added Advani.

Setting up the CCTVs is likely to cost around Rs1.5 lakh.
The association has already hired seven guards for the area.
Vinod Sawant, senior inspector of Colaba police station, said, “We have given permission for CCTVs, as it will help us. We have asked them to have a one month storage capacity for it.”
