Soon, international travellers alighting at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and wishing to head to Pune can sit back and enjoy a safe cab ride there without pinching their pockets.

The Mumbai-Pune taxi association, which plies cabs between the Dadar and Pune railway stations, is now being allowed to extend its services from the airport to Pune.

Disposing of a petition filed by the association on the lack of assurance of security from the city police at the airport, the Bombay High Court on Monday directed the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), operator of the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport, to take a call on providing facilities to the association’s members to park their vehicles, irrespective of the passenger carrying capacity.

According to the petition, the association was denied space to park taxis by the MIAL  even after getting all the requisite permission from the authorities concerned. The airport agency had refused to grant the go-ahead after the July 13 bomb blasts, insisting on a no-objection certificate from the police.

Government pleader D Nalawade, however, submitted a report filed by a senior Inspector of the Sahar police station, giving the assurance of providing the necessary security to cabs if they are allowed to run between the airport and Pune.

A division bench, thereafter, directed the MIAL to let the association park its taxis. It also told the association to provide all necessary details of taxis and the drivers’ identity to the police.

In 2009, the government had decided to add to the fleet of cabs at the airport. The association had then approached various agencies, which granted approvals in 2010, but the matter was put on the backburner due to the terror attacks.
