If things go as planned, the Central Railway’s suburban train operations will be monitored on the computerised panel by June next year.

CR plans to install 900 digital axle counters to indicate the presence of a train in a particular section to avoid any mishap. This will improve the efficiency and frequency of trains.

“Currently, we operate nearly 12 services in an hour at a frequency of four to five minutes. But after the completion of the project, we will be able to run almost 15 services in an hour improving the frequency to 3.15 minutes,” said SC Mudgerikar, chief PRO of CR.

Mudgerikar said that the CR follows a manual procedure wherein every time the train leaves a station, the station manager informs the next one. During an accident, the motorman informs the station manager of the approaching station, and he contacts the control room at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The controller then issues orders of diversions for the next approaching trains.

“With the new train management system, the controller at the central control room will be able to see the movement of every train in the entire section between CST and Kalyan,” he said.

“The system will be of great use once we complete the work of conversion of traction from direct current to alternate current. It will improve the speed of trains, and the time between services,” said Aditya Kumar, chief workshop manager.
