By early March, BEST is planning to start an SMS alerts system to inform its bus pass holders about the expiry of their passes a week in advance. The Undertaking is apparently hopeful of curbing misuse of passes by those passengers who, in the previous system, would travel for days, even months, after the expiry of their passes.

BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said that the current system of smart card passes works on the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology and, thus, complete information about the passes is stored directly with the servers at the Undertaking’s headquarters.

This centralisation will streamline the process of information-gathering regarding the passes. Based on it, SMS updates can now be implemented.“We are not going to outsource the work of putting the system in place, so it should start by early March,” Gupta said.

The BEST started reissuing bus passes under the re-launched smart card system on December 7, 2010. According to Gupta, the Undertaking has issued 2.7 lakh passes from some 85 centres across the city.

Gupta also said that by February end, all buses leaving from the Wadala depot will get an onboard e-ticketing facility. If successful, the concept will be expanded to other areas.
