Braving the heavy rain, hundreds gathered at the ground floor of Vraj Villa building at Amrut Nagar in Ghatkopar (West) on Sunday afternoon to bid adieu to investigative journalist J Dey, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Powai on Saturday.

The grief-stricken family members of the slain crime reporter broke down on seeing a huge crowd outside their residence.

Dey’s family members were inconsolable. While his mother simply refused to believe that her son was no more, Dey’s sister was seen giving support to her old mother.

Dey’s body was kept in the main hall of the flat where his mother resided. Everyone who knew and wanted to know Dey visited the site to get a final glimpse of one of the best crime journalists in the city.

Those who visited the funeral were shocked and could not come to terms with the fact that Dey was shot dead. Dey’s brutal killing has sent shock-waves into the journalistic fraternity.

Dey used to reside with his wife Shubha in Powai, while his mother and sister live in Vraj Villa in Amrut Nagar. Dey’s body was cremated in a cemetery near Somaiya College in Ghatkopar (East) on Sunday afternoon.

Apart from his colleagues and friends, politicians like Arif Naseem Khan, Kripashankar Singh and Chhagan Bhujbal paid homage to the “commander”, a name with which Dey was better known in the journalistic fraternity. Even policemen and informants of Dey were present in large numbers to pay homage.

Expecting VIPs, there was heavy police bandobast at Dey’s Amrut Nagar residence and at the cemetery. A large number of onlookers had gathered outside the entrance of the Vraj Villa building.

“The attack on Dey is an attack on the freedom of the press. It is the responsibility of the government to take strict measures and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future,” said a senior journalist.

“He was an institution and an ideal for us. It is shocking that a senior journalist is killed in such a barbaric fashion in Mumbai, which is considered to be one of the safest places in the country. His demise is a big loss for journalism,” said a budding crime journalist.

“All angles, like the involvement of the oil mafia and the underworld, are being probed by the police. We condemn this barbaric and inhuman act,” said public works department minister Chhagan Bhujbal.
