A Mumbai police team has managed to trace Bollywood starlet Meenakshi Thapa’s body from the sewage tank in one of the accused’s house in Allahabad. But, her severed head is yet to be recovered.

The model-turned-actor had been reported missing from her Lokhandwala residence since March 17.

On April 14, the crime branch arrested Amit Jaiswal and his paramour Preeti Sarin from Bandra for allegedly abducting and killing Thapa, 26.

The body, cut into pieces, was found in a tank near Darbhanga Colony in the George Town area of Allahabad where Sarin’s father lives. Jaiswal, at least 10 years elder to her, also hails from Allahabad. The two had eloped to Mumbai last year after Jaiswal’s wife found about their affair.

According to police, Thapa, a native of Dehra Dun, had arrived in Mumbai a few months ago. The duo befriended Thapa on the sets of Madhur Bhandarkar’s film Heroine last month.

“Thapa had told them that she comes from a rich family in Dehra Dun, and was working in film industry as a hobby. The duo then planned to kidnap Thapa and demand ransom from her family,” said a crime branch officer.

“On March 13, Jaiswal and Surin left with Thapa to Allahabad on the pretext of a film shoot. They reached there the next afternoon, and then went to Gorakhpur,” the officer added.

They reportedly kept her captive and called up her family in Dehra Dun and demanded a ransom of Rs15 lakh.

Thapa’s mother deposited Rs 30,000 twice in Thapa’s account, and also told her son what had happened. He then lodged an FIR on March 17, and the case was later transferred to the Amboli police in Mumbai.

Not getting a quick response, the duo strangled Thapa to death, cut up her body and dumped it in a water tank. They carried the severed head with them on a bus journey from Gorakhpur to Allahabad. Jaiswal and Sarin reportedly told the police that they had thrown the head, which was wrapped in a cloth, from the bus window “somewhere on the road”.

“During investigation, officials of the crime branch unit 9, found the mobile call location of Jaiswal and Thapa in the same area at Allahabad. The duo was caught and initially denied involvement, but finally confessed their crime,” said Himanshu Roy, JCP (crime).
