For two-month-old Devi nurses and doctors at Sion hospital are her parents after her own parents abandoned her in the hospital on discovering that she is suffering from a rare congenital disorder.

“Devi is suffering from total colonic duplication with a bipid uterus and bladder. From below, after two-thirds of her spinal cord, everything is duplicated with two urinary tracts, two anus, etc. She was brought to us on November 19. Her parents abandoned her on November 23. Since then, the hospital is taking care of her,” said Dr Paras Kothari, head of paediatric department, Sion hospital. According to the doctors, cases of congenital double anus are very rare.

Kothari said, “The parents were told that the child may be born with defects, after the sonography report. However, it was too late for abortion. We had counselled them that her condition is curable and had also assured them that monetary help will be provided.”

According to the doctors, Devi was the second child. Keeping in mind her condition, the doctors have decided to send her to an ashram only after corrective surgeries are done and she is fine.

“The Shraddhanand ashram had come forward to take her but in view of the condition, we have decided to keep her in the hospital. We are planning corrective surgeries so that her system can function as normal as possible,” said Dr Gurse Sandlas.

Doctors said that they will have to perform at least two to three major surgeries to reconstruct the external and internal duplications. Kothari said, “We have done laparo-scopy surgery, MRI and CT scan. She weighs four kg. We are waiting for her to at least reach six to seven kg so that she can sustain the surgeries. We will wait till she is few months older.”

“The doctors, nurses, mothers of other children admitted in the ward are very fond of her. Nurses take care of her, mothers in the ward breastfeed her, people have even donated clothes for her,” said Sandlas.
