The rape of a Spanish woman at Peridot society in Bandra jolted many, Bandra residents and others alike. And now, it has driven a Bollywood celebrity to take some action.

Actor and Bandra resident Dalip Tahil has created a forum, endorsed and supported by the police, called Community For Crime Prevention Through Awareness. It aims to create awareness among citizens in order to prevent crime such as what happened in the suburb recently.

Tahil created the forum after discussing his plan with additional commissioner of police (West) Vishwas Nangre Patil.

Expressing shock at the negligence of housing societies in hiring appropriate security guards, Tahil said, “It is surprising to know that societies don’t do their homework before hiring security guards. The guards on duty are usually untrained, irresponsible and without licence. I have no sympathy for their double-duty stress. That’s not an excuse they can give to the helpless rape victim, so why should anyone else buy it?”

Tahil stressed on the need for revision of laws in case of habitual offenders.

“What are the lawmakers at Mantralaya doing? Don’t they realise laws need to be revised as times change? The robber who raped the Spanish woman was a habitual offender, and yet he managed to get bail a few days ago,” he said.

Interestingly, the first member on board with Tahil is writer Dilip D’Souza whose mother Neela D’Souza’s house was burgled on the same night by the same accused.

Though the forum is limited to Bandra as of now, Tahil said he hoped more citizens from other parts would come and join hands for making their areas safe too.
