On Friday, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the crime branch arrested a teenage brother-sister duo on charges of drug peddling.

The two, claimed the police, were used as drug couriers by their mother, who fled when she learnt her children were caught with brown sugar worth Rs4.5 lakh, in a police trap on Friday. She was arrested by the police on Saturday.

According to the police, the 12-year-old boy, his 17-year old sister and mother, Meena Vadivel Devendra, 40, are residents of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar in Sion. Devendra is an idli vendor and  worked as a part-time drug peddler.

The police received information by the Worli unit of ANC about a drug deal near a maidan at Chunabhatti on Friday morning.

Accordingly, a trap was laid and the siblings were caught at around 10.30am as they were found loitering suspiciously.

‘’We found 410grams of brown sugar in their possession. They revealed that their mother was using them as couriers for delivering drugs, and had done so several times in the past. They also said that their mother was around, but fled when she learnt about the trap,’’ said an ANC official, requesting anonymity.

On Saturday, the police laid a trap at her Sion residence and apprehended her. Devendra was remanded to police custody till March 10, and her children were sent to Dongri children’s home by the concerned court.

‘’During interrogation Devendra admitted to been using her children as couriers for delivering drugs so no one would find deals suspicious. We are investigating the source from where she procured drugs and her clients, too,’’ said and officer, adding that Devendra’s son was studying in school.
