The Shiv Sena has once again trained its guns on master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The party has opposed his appearance in a short film being made by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to spread awareness about water conservation.

Sunil Prabhu, Sena’s leader in the BMC, strongly objected to the cricketer featuring in the short film at a meeting of the standing committee on Wednesday. “The common man should feature in the film instead of a celebrity,” Prabhu said.

Tendulkar, who recently shot for the film, will be asking Mumbaikars to save water by citing his own example. “I have stopped using shower while bathing. I use a bucket of water. You should also avoid the shower,” Tendulkar says in the film. Prabhu has objected to these lines that the cricketer will mouth.

“The common Mumbaikar does not use a shower. How can such a dialogue make any difference?” Prabhu said.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Yogesh Sagar sided with Prabhu and said that the film’s dialogues were “rubbish”. “Common Mumbaikar does not have for a bucket of water. Why are you talking about a shower,” Sagar said.

Sena corporator Prabhakar Shinde went a step further and said that there was no need to involve celebrities in the awareness film. “The celebrities can’t save Mumbai from the water crisis just by mouthing a few dialogues. Experts need to be involved in the ‘Save Water’ campaign,” Shinde said

Shinde suggested water expert Madhav Chitale’s name for the film. “Chitale has studied the water situation of Mumbai and he knows what steps should be taken to overcome the water shortage,” Shinde added.

After the discussion a the meeting, standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar directed the civic administration to involve commoners in the film.

“The film should be in the peoples’ language and it should be easy to understand. Only celebrities’ participation will not serve the purpose,” Waikar said.
