The Shiv Sena appears to have quietly rescinded its stand over the silencing of Shivaji Park in Dadar.

The Sena-ruled civic body, after denying permission to use the ground for a concert on Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s 127th birth anniversary on May 29 citing a recent Bombay high court order which had declared the area a silence zone, the corporation allowed the use of the ground for the purpose on Tuesday sans the permission to use loud speakers.

However, the party has announced that it will help the organisers acquire permission to use loud speakers for the event.

The Bombay high court will hear a public interest litigation filed by the organisers today.

The party has backtracked on its earlier stand on the insistence of Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, who, after returning from a foreign tour last week, asked his party men to protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for denying permission to the concert.

Thackeray’s order came after successful diplomacy by the organisers, an organisation called Swadesh Seva. The officials of the organisation called on Thackeray at his Bandra residence and invited him as the chief guest for the concert.

Thackeray not only accepted their invitation, but also assured them that the party will try its best to get the necessary permissions for the concert. “The Sena supports you on this issue. We will join your battle to organise the concert at Shivaji Park,” Thackeray told them.

Following the meeting, the BMC on Tuesday gave its nod for the concert, pushing the onus on providing permission to use loud speakers on the police. “The BMC has given permission to use the ground on May 29 for two hours. But the permission to use loud speakers will be given only by the police,” Virendra Kumar Jain, assistant municipal commissioner, said.

The organisers are adamant on holding the concert at Shivaji Park because Savarkar lived and died at a stone’s throw distance from the historic ground.
