Saying that arithmetic is more important than chemistry in politics, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde has said that the Shiv Sena and the MNS will have to
overcome their differences to fight the Congress-NCP combine.

Speaking with DNA, Munde acknowledged that the Sena has its reservations about reconciling with Raj Thackeray’s MNS. However, he insisted that the two parties will have to come together to minimise the division of non-Congress and non-NCP votes in the state.

Munde said: “It is inevitable for the Sena and the MNS to work towards a common goal. If we have to come to power in the state, the BJP and the Sena will have to bring other parties on board to isolate the Congress-NCP combine.”

On a mellower note, he added: “Ultimately, it is for the individual party leaders to take a final call on alliances.”

Incidentally, Sena chief Bal Thackeray wrote in the editorial of the party’s mouthpiece, Saamna, on Tuesday that there was no need for a third party in the saffron alliance. He also criticised Munde for having too national a perspective.

Munde candidly added: “It is my sincere endeavour to bring both parties on a common platform. I also want to boost the morale of the party workers. The Sena-BJP alliance has remained in the opposition for 15 years. We have to inculcate hope among the workers that we can come to power. The series of scams that have taken place in the Congress-NCP regime will help us bring down the government.”

A section within the Sena, however, fears that the BJP may be pursuing the MNS’ agenda ahead of the crucial BMC elections in 2012.

A source in the Sena said, “The MNS wants to confuse the Sena’s rank and file by fanning theories of the reunion of the two Senas.” But BJP leaders have dismissed the charge.
