Come March 10, there will be a new mayor in charge of Mumbai, and this time it could well be a woman. In the fray are Shiv Sena corporators, Shubha Raul from Borivli and Chembur resident Mangala Kate.

Shubha Raul, who is a practitioner of Ayurveda, is a second-term corporator from Borivli. She was also the chairperson of the Women and Child Welfare Committee. The Chembur-based Kate whose husband, Tukaram, was Narayan Rane’s close aide, is a second-term corporator. “Kate is the Sena’s answer to Rane in Mumbai,” said a senior Sena leader. “She is one of our best candidates.”

From the Opposition, Congress corporator Sheetal Mhatre from Borivli filed her nomination for the mayoral post on Monday. For the post of chairperson of the Standing Committee, the Sena wants to retain Andheri corporator Ravindra Waikar for the next year. Sena corporator from Goregaon, Sunil Prabhu, who is a third-term corporator, will be the new leader of the party in BMC.

The ex-Education Committee chairman, chairman of the Standing Committee and MHADA chairman, Waikar is a four-term corporator from Andheri. Prabhu also was a former Standing Committee chairman and leader of the party. The Improvement and BEST chairpersons will be from the BJP and Sena respectively. “Though this year the BJP wanted chairmanship of the BEST Committee, the Sena has decided to keep it in house,” a senior leader said.

Sanjay Raut, Sena spokesperson and leader, said, “We will manage to get 120 corporators to take the BMC house. Besides BMC, the Saffron alliance will appoint mayors at Thane and Ulhasnagar. We are close to the magic figure there.”

For BEST Committee, Vilas Chawri, a rebel Sena candidate, from Khar-Danda is the likely candidate. For the post of deputy mayor, BJP’s five-term corporator from Borivili, Vinod Ghedia, and Malad corporator Shailaja Girkar are in the race. Municipal Secretary Department says the nominations for the mayoral post will be filed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, MNS corporator Rajendra Lad has announced that his party will support the Congress in the mayoral election. MNS has seven corporators in the BMC.
