Shiv Sena activists allegedly pelted stones at one of the vehicles in the convoy of Maharashtra unit Congress President Manikrao Thakre near Ner village ahead of Tuesday's polling for the local bodies, police said.

"The incident took place yesterday night when the motorcade was on its way to village Watfali where Thakre's son Rahul is contesting ZP elections," they said, adding district guardian minister Nitin Raut was also accompanying Thakre when the incident took place.

The Shiv Sena activists also thrashed driver of the car, police said.

"Sitting Shiv Sena MLA from Digras Sanjay Rathod and 15 others were booked under various sections of IPC in the incident though no one was arrested yet," Ner Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ramdas Patil said.

Rathod had earlier filed a complaint with the Election Officer at Ner alleging Thakre and Raut are distributing money to Dalit voters in Bhalegaon village.

Senior district officials including DSP Ranjankumar Sharma and District Collector Shravan Hardikar visited the village after the incident.

Meanwhile, Rathod has denied his involvement in the attack.

Earlier in the day, polling for 27 Zilla Parishads and 309 Panchayat Samitis was held across the state.
