Shirur suspects in custody till Tuesday

The two farmers from Shirur taluka arrested by Pune rural police on Wednesday for allegedly cultivating poppy, have been remanded in police custody till Tuesday.

Acting on the information received, the police had raided the farms of Satish Korekar in Nhavre and Dattatreya Chavan of Vadgaon Rasai and found them cultivating poppy as an inter-crop in onion fields.

The police seized 75 kg poppy pods from both fields and the area under cultivation was around 2 acres.

While arguing for eight days’ police custody, the Pune rural police pointed out that many questions remained to be answered by the farmers.

These include possible source of the seeds, the way they marketed it and the people involved in the operations.
