The Sharad Pawar Udyan, located at Kondhwa Khurd, is in a shambles due to lack of maintenance and upkeep. A visit to the garden revealed that the benches inside the garden are broken and the slides and swings are rusted.

There is an electric junction box ((22,000 volts) outside the broken compound wall posing a risk to the kids as they play and sometimes even jump over it to fetch their ball.
There is a small well in the garden covered with an iron mesh which is rusted and has become fragile. Several plants in the garden have dried up.

The broken compound wall also leads to a nala, which is again unsafe for children. According to the local NCP leaders, the garden was inaugurated by deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar on June 7, 1992.

The area at that time was under the jurisdiction of local gram panchayat. A senior NCP leader of the area, Nilesh Dhandekar, claimed that after 1997, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took over the garden. “But it has miserably failed to maintain the garden. We have requested PMC authorities several times to improve the condition of the garden. But so far, there has been no response,’’ he lamented.

Dhandekar said a few days ago, the water supply of the
garden was cut off by the PMC. “This is only one garden in the locality and the kids have no other open space to play,’’ said Ravindra Masurkar, whose shop is located opposite the park.
When contacted, the deputy commissioner (zone II) of PMC, BG Mane, maintained that the PMC is not responsible for the garden’s maintenance.

“Although it is within the PMC jurisdiction, it has been built on private land. The PMC has not developed it,’’ Mane claimed.
