Taking advantage of the absence of city Congress leader and MP, Suresh Kalmadi, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in a corruption-related case, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar appealed to citizens to vote for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the civic elections and give it a clear mandate to pursue the pending development projects in the city.

Pawar, who is also guardian minster of Pune district, was addressing party activists on Saturday at the Nisarg Mangal Karyalaya at Gultekdi.

Without naming Kalmadi, he said, “The city Congress leader is lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with a corruption case even though the Congress has its government at the centre and a chief minister in the state. This means that there is something fishy in the case.”

Citing the corruption charges against Kalmadi in the Commonwealth Youth Games and Commonwealth Games by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India report, Pawar said the time has come to electorally defeat and remove such corrupt people. “Give us a clear majority to push all major pending city development projects like ring road, metro and bio-diversity park,” he said.

Pawar, in his one-hour speech, blamed the Congress for forcing the NCP to forge the Pune Pattern with the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party as it did not join hands with the NCP like it did at the centre and the state.

Wooing the Dalit vote bank on the background of Republican Party of India (A) leader Ramdas Athavale joining hands with the saffron brigade, Pawar promised to make substantial budgetary provision for the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mills in the coming budget session. He said if possible, the state government would kick off work of the memorial on April 14, the birth anniversary of Ambedkar.

Taking credit for naming Marathwada University as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University which was opposed by
the Shiv Sena, Pawar questioned Athavale’s decision to join the saffron brigade.
