Union agriculture minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar held discussions with Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar here yesterday afternoon.

Officials said the meeting was about expediting development works in Pune and Pimpri- Chinchwad area, including the Chakan Airport project.

However, the meeting took place against the backdrop of tension between the two coalition partners after the RBI dissolved the board of directors of NCP-dominated Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank last month.

The NCP-Congress ruling coalition is also facing a new challenge in the shape of Dalit leader Ramdas Athawale's alliance with opposition Shiv Sena-BJP, ahead of the local self-government bodies polls later this year.

Sources said the three leaders discussed how to counter the alliance, and to ensure that Dalit votes were not weaned away.
