Pawar criticised the city unit leaders for hurting the prospects of the party due to rampant factionalism in the last three years.
Upset with rampant factionalism in NCP's Mumbai unit, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday met state unit leaders and ministers to discuss revamping of the city organisation.
The meeting took place at the residence of Rural Development Minister and Guardian Minister of Mumbai city Jayant Patil in South Mumbai.
Addressing the meeting, Pawar criticised the city unit leaders for hurting the prospects of the party due to rampant factionalism in the last three years.
Stressing the need for strengthening the organisation, he said Mumbai's social and political fabric is different from the rest of the country. "The need of the hour is to take into confidence minorities including linguistic minorities and youth," he said.
Party spokesperson Madan Bafna said Pawar discussed the strategy to revamp the city unit with a view to improve its political strength in the country's commercial capital.
Bafna said Pawar held one to one meetings with ministers, legislators and senior office bearers on steps to be taken to resurrect the party in Mumbai.
Sources said about 30 to 35 senior leaders and office bearers gave their opinion on the steps to be taken to revive the party in Mumbai and views on new city unit president.
Incumbent president Narendra Verma may be retained or MLC Kiran Pawaskar or Mumbai North East MP Sanjay Patil may be given opportunity, sources said.
"Since 1999, NCP has little significance in Mumbai's political scene. If we need to improve our numerical strength in the state Legislature, our performance in Mumbai needs to improve," sources attending the meeting said.
The is the first in series of steps that the party has taken as a strengthening exercise for the 2014 elections.
Earlier, on many occasions, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had spoken on the need for the NCP to better itself in Mumbai and Vidarbha, to go ahead of the Congress as the single largest party in the state legislature.
At present, NCP has three MLAs from Mumbai including Minister of State for Housing, Industries and Environment Sachin Ahir.
MLCs like Vidya Chavan, Ram Pandagle, Kiran Pawaskar, Prakash Binsale and Ramesh Shendge belong to the city.
Mumbai has 36 seats in Legislative Assembly.
