Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar today lashed out at people opposing development projects in name of environmental damage.

"If an industry or a power project is coming up, some people oppose it in the name of environment damage. How can employment be generated with this," Pawar said here at a function of merger of two trade unions.

"In fact these people encourage unemployment through the opposition despite a greater need to set up power projects to increase productivity. We need to make them understand this," Pawar said.

He also criticised division of society on the basis of caste, religion and language. "The working class is being divided on the basis of caste, religion and language," he said.

At the function, the Hind Mazdoor Kisan Panchayat was merged with Hind Mazdoor Sabha in presence of trade union leaders like Sharad Rao, Umraval Purohit, Thampan Thomas and Girishkumar Pandey.
