Health minister Suresh Shetty on Monday said the state government would go in for 100% implementation of the laws on female foeticide, initiating strict action against medical professionals who violate laws.

“Any amount of strikes and boycotts will not deter the government,” Shetty said.

He also announced that his department was working on legal aspects of initiating a ban on standalone sonography centres or centres which only perform sonography.

Speaking at the launch of the online complaint mechanism portal amchimulgi.gov.in against female foeticide, Shetty said the government was also planning to make radiologists mandatory for each sonography centres. “A radiologist in Kolhapur is a consultant for a centre in Beed and no one has a tab on this. We are planning to make it mandatory to have radiologists at sonography centres,” he said.

Terming the increase in cases of female foeticide a “ticking time bomb,” chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said there was need to celebrate the girl child.

“The example of silent observer at Kolhapur was widely appreciated and there is a need to emulate such cases. If laws are not followed, it is necessary to instill fear,” he said. Chavan said the health department should develop the online complaint registration portal in Marathi to make it convenient for citizens to fill in data in their language.  Though the website is in English, Marathi and Hindi, data can only be submitted in English.
