The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an ultimatum to the Seven Hill Hospital, stating that if the hospital doesn’t sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the BMC regarding services to poor patients by Friday, the BMC will start process of taking over the hospital.

Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner, said that if the hospital management refuses to sign the MoU and thereby refuses to accept the BMC’s guidelines, the corporation will initiate legal action by sending notices to the hospital to seize the hospital.

Sameer Desai, Congress corporator from Goregaon, raised the issue in the civic meeting. All parties have also demanded that the BMC take action against the hospital. “Since the hospital has been constructed on the land leased by the BMC at Andheri, the municipal commissioner has the authority to take over the hospital if conditions laid down in the memorandum of understanding are not adhered to,” Desai said.

Mhaiskar said, “We are going to ask the hospital to sign the MoU by Friday, and if they do not agree to sign it, we will initiate the correct legal procedure. The BMC has already issued a stop work notice to the hospital construction. The BMC has also issued a notice to shut down the canteen. They will issue further notices to the hospital management, unless they agree to the BMC’s conditions.”

The bone of contention is the management’s decision to give 300 beds in the general ward to BMC, whereas the BMC is demanding beds in every ward of the super-specialty hospital. “They will have to give us our share of beds in every ward of different departments. A special general body meeting of the BMC will discuss the issue next week,” continued Mhaiskar.
