Kailash Unhavane, 27, needed to repay a loan of Rs30,000. So, the domestic help stole cash and jewellery, collectively worth Rs1.35 lakh, from a posh Dadar flat of a chief executive officer of a multinational company.
“We arrested Unhavane on Sunday. He had been working at the Dadar flat for the past six years,” senior inspector Ashok Unde of the Dadar police station said. The accused has been remanded in police custody till March 17.
Unhavane reportedly told the police that he had borrowed Rs30,000 from his friend. He committed the theft to repay the amount.
Unhavane used to work in the 28th-floor flat in Twin Tower, Veer Savarkar Marg, Dadar (West). His master was out of town when he stole the booty. On March 9, the CEO’s wife realised that cash and jewellery had gone missing from the bedroom cupboard, and lodged a police complaint.
Immediately after the complaint was lodged, Unhavane stopped coming to work. The cops became suspicious and started looking for him. Trying to save her son from severe punishment, Draupadibhai, Unhavane’s mother, went to the police station and returned portion of the money stolen by him.
Unhavane’s employer told Draupadibhai that he would withdraw the charge against her son, and told her to send him back to work. The accused came to join duty on Sunday, and was arrested by the waiting cops.
