Senior Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) leader and former Member of Parliament Vithalrao Ganpatrao Hande passed away in Mumbai due to age-related ailments, family sources here said today.
Hande, 89, died last evening. He is survived by four daughters.
Born on October 1, 1920 in a farmer's family at Adgaon near here, he participated in `Samyukta Maharashtra'. He won the 1977 Lok Sabha elections from Nashik.
He was a member of the State Legislative Council between 1968-1974 and 1966-1992 and also served as leader of opposition in the Upper House.
Hande was chairperson and secretary of city-based educational institute Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj and had fought for interests of the farmers.
