A senior doctor was found dead inside his residential quarters at the civic-run Kasturba Hospital on Friday afternoon.Dr Umesh Prabhu, an assistant medical officer, lost his job in July following allegations of medical negligence. It is believed that this could have led him to commit suicide. There were several complaints of negligence and rude behaviour with patients against the 41-year-old doctor. The hospital authorities had asked him to vacate the quarters.

Senior police inspector Pravin Gosavi from the Agripada police station said it was clear from the condition of the body that the doctor had committed suicide at least three days ago."There was no suicide note found near the body. But he had written his address and telephone number on a piece of paper," Gosavi said. The police are trying to find out details about the exact nature of complaints against him. In all probability Prabhu took sleeping pills, the officer said.

But a hospital source said he might have injected himself with some drug. He said Prabhu worked with the hospital for more than 12 years. He was an introvert person, the source said. "He did not come out of his quarter for the past two days."

Around 10 in the morning on Friday, the police broke open the door and found him dead.
