A senior citizen in Gamdevi was duped by two conmen to the tune of over Rs3lakh over a period of three years, on the pretext of providing her funds through a welfare trust.

However, on Monday, the lady outwitted them and handed them over to the police.

The arrested duo has been identified as Amit Hanumant Palande, 24, and Vinod Ramesh More, 32.

According to the police, in 2008, the victim Kiran Shirish Shah, 66 and resident of Gangadas Wadi near Babulnath Temple, learnt that her son Sandeep, 45, who was based in the US, was paralysed. She then contacted More, who was known to the family, for monetary help.

“Shah wanted money to visit the US and for Sandeep’s medical treatment. More then introduced her to Palande, who claimed to work at a welfare trust at Fountain and promised to get her a loan of Rs50,000 from the trust,” said an official from Gamdevi police station.

He added that a few days later, the duo came to her home, showed papers related to the trust and allegedly took Rs5,000 from her on the pretext of sanctioning her loan. “This became a regular affair. They accepted a total of Rs3.77 lakh from Shah on different occasions,” the official added.

Another police official from Gamdevi police station said that on Monday, Palande again visited the victim’s residence. However, this time Shah was prepared to teach the conman a lesson. “Shah indulged Palande in talks and began walking towards Babulnath Temple. Once near the temple, Shah shouted for help, after which a police constable posted nabbed Palande before he could flee.

A case was then lodged at the Gamdevi police station, after which More was also arrested. The duo has been remanded in police custody till January 28,” the official said.
