The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police busted a rave party at a private residence and arrested five youngsters, all senior executives at a Malad BPO, on Tuesday.

Eighteen gm of purest quality hashish, called Manali cream, and 30gm of marijuana were seized in the raid at the apartment at Malwani.

According to ANC officials, the youth, who were aged 20-26, are from affluent families. One of the accused is said to be the son of a senior professor from Kolkata University and is the brother of a film writer. The pipes seized from them were imported from Europe.

“One of the accused opened the door while consuming hashish. He had a hookah in his hand and the room was filled with smoke. They were listening to trance music at a high volume,” said an ANC officer. ANC officers suspect that the youth could be involved in supply of drugs to other people. All five were produced in court which released them on conditional bail.

“The accused had some of the best quality hookah, which were meant only for drug consumption. These have to be imported from Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and similar west European countries. Three hookahs made of stone were being used by the youth when the flat was raided,’’ an ANC officer said.
The trance music that the accused had for the party is said to be elitist. Other than this they had got props for dance and enjoyment at the party, which is said to be used in raves, he added.

Mumbai police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal told DNA that the raid was part of the ongoing crackdown on narcotics abuse. “I would not like to say that all BPO staffers are found in narcotics abuse, but yes, this is an area of concern. BPO is a high-stress job and life is reversed there. There could be people who are involved in narcotics abuse. It is a fact that people from affluent classes have money and can afford to resort to this, but people who cannot afford it and still do it are an even bigger worry for the police.”
