In spite of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) improving its tally in the recently-held Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, as compared to the last time round, an unyielding and reticent alliance partner in the Shiv Sena may force the BJP leadership to eat the humble pie, yet again.

In no mood to display generosity, the Shiv Sena has decided not to part with the chairmanship of any important statutory committees, including Standing Committee, Education Committee, Improvements Committee and the BEST Committee.

BJP is always offered a raw deal initially, like chairmanship of non-statutory committees which do not hold much importance in the BMC, when it comes to taking effective decisions for the city. “Each time BJP is given less important portfolios it has accepted it. First year, they are not given any chairmanship. It is the subsequent year and the determination of the BJP leader that decides their position,” said a senior Sena leader.

In past, leaders like Gopal Shetty, Sardar Tarasingh and Ashish Shelar were known to be tough players when it came to commanding respect from the alliance partner. They not only kept the Sena-BJP coalition going, but also maintained the BJP’s individual identity as a national party intact in the BMC.

It may be recalled that Sardar Tarasingh, who could dictate his terms with the Sena, was the first BJP chairman of the Standing Committee. But it ended there.

Also, the present bunch of BJP corporators are not as aggressive as the last term. BJP leader in the BMC Dilip Patel is well-known and respected senior corporator, but is said to be a soft-spoken person who is unlikely to bargain hard.

A BJP leader reasoned that, “Even if the city BJP and state BJP leaders intervened, it is important that Patel does not leave any end loose, as it will make it tough for the party to bargain its position while deciding important proposals.”

The BJP has won 31 of the 63 it contested, as compared to only 28 of the 75 seats last time round.
