The Shiv Sena’s Lok Sabha member, Shivaji Adhalrao Patil, has shot a letter to Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma suggesting that the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commission (PCMC) refrain from taking a hasty decision regarding demolition of buildings in the Dighi magazine depot Red Zone.

Patil, in the letter, reminded Sharma that the Sena has been fighting for reduction of the Red Zone from 1,145 metres to 600 metres fo the last three years.

“Several meetings on the issue had also taken place in the past. The defence authorities had earlier instructed the PCMC to demolish structures that had come up in the Red Zone, but the civic body could not do anything about those structures. This time too the civic body should not act in haste trying to comply with the orders of the defence authorities,” the Sena MP stated.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Eknath Pawar has criticised the ruling party and the civic authorities for playing with the fate of nearly 20,000 residents of Dighi area. Pawar blamed the PCMC administration and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for giving false assurances to the residents at the time of elections.

The Ammunition Factory Khadki (AFK) and the defence ministry have demanded that the PCMC forthwith stop the encroachments around the no-construction area of the Dighi magazine depot.

Even Bhosari MLA, Vilas Lande, has written to the chief minister demanding that the houses constructed in the Red Zone not be demolished under any circumstances.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the BJP organised a rally in Bhosari area, warning PCMC authorities to refrain from demolishing the constructions in the Dighi Red Zone.
