Second World War veteran dies at 98 in Pune

Captain Shivram Nangre Patil, 98, a Second World War veteran and an awardee of the Military Cross, died in the city following an illness last week.

Captain Shivram Nangre Patil, 98, a Second World War veteran and an awardee of the Military Cross, died in the city following an illness last week.

City-based Sainik Mitra Parivar representative, and his architect son, Manohar Nangre Patil, said on Wednesday that Captain Shivram had joined the Bombay Engineering Group in 1934.
Shivram saw action in the Second World War and the 1948 Indo-Pak operations before retiring as a Captain in the Indian Army in 1966.

Manohar said his father was invited by the Queen of England in 1947 to receive the Military Cross.

Speaking to DNA, Manohar said post retirement from the army, his father worked for many years with the Pune Vidyarthi Sahayak Samiti. “A typical soldier, my father lived an independent life till the end. He did not suffer from any ailments, except that he had a fall and broke his hip joint on April 7, 2011, and was operated upon.”
Captain Shivram is survived by his two sons, Uttam, 70, and Manohar (60) and their families.
