An Activa scooter damaged in the Zaveri Bazaar blast is a crucial piece of evidence because investigators feel that the explosives were planted on the scooter.

The scooter has been sent for forensic analysis.

The police had cracked the Malegaon 2008 blast case with the help of retrieving the chassis number of the bike found at the blast site.

“Soon after the blast at Zaveri Bazaar, there was confusion about where the bomb had been planted. We have found a scooter and a Hero Honda Splendor motorcycle from the 3rd Agyari Lane in Zaveri Bazaar where the blast occurred. Initial investigations have revealed that the bomb was planted on the scooter and the motorcycle was damaged because it was parked near the scooter,” said an investigator, requesting anonymity.

The officer added that forensic experts will play a crucial role to give a lead into the investigations. “The number plate has got damaged in the blast. We are sure that the vehicle’s registration number would have been a bogus one. But if the engine and chassis number of the vehicle can be retrieved, we can certainly trace the person who owns the vehicle or who was the last owner,” the officer said.

During the investigations of the 2008 Malegaon blast case, the police had recovered a damaged LML Freedom motorcycle, on which the bomb was allegedly planted at Bhikku Chowk.

The engine and chassis number of bike was tampered with using a chemical. But the forensic experts managed to find the original chassis number. It was traced to Sadhvi Pragnyasingh Chandrapalsingh Thakur, 38, a native of Indore, residing in Surat.
