A 13-year-old girl committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself at her Versova resident after her mother allegedly scolded her. Police have not found any suicide note.

According to an officer of the Versova police station, the girl, Navamita Sanilapujari, a Class VIII student, studied at a school in Andheri. She lived with her mother and younger brother in Versova Village, Andheri (West). Her father works in Dubai.

“When Navamita returned from school around 3 pm, her mother scolded her for being late. She did not say anything to her mother and did not talk to anybody,” said sub-inspector Sanjay Shinde of the Versova police station.

“When her mother went to their neighbour’s house with her two-and-a-half-year-old sibling, she hanged herself to a ceiling rod,” Shinde said.

When her mother returned home, she found Navamita was hanging with a rope. With the help of neighbours, she was rushed to a private hospital nearby where doctors declared her dead. The neighbours then informed the police, which sent the girl’s body for postmortem at Cooper Hospital.

“Her mother said she never noticed any suicidal tendencies in her daughter,” Shinde said.
