Scientist Jignesh Doshi of Serum Institute of India on Monday accused a city hospital of medical negligence leading to the death of a baby delivered by his wife.

Doshi told reporters that on March 31 his seven-month pregnant wife, Pooja, was taken to Noble Hospital in Hadapsar where she was admitted for treatment of her genetic condition — sickle cell anaemia. Pooja, an assistant professor at University of Pune, was given blood transfusion on the same day at 10.30 pm.

“Her haemoglobin count was 9.4 gm. There was no need for a transfusion and later Pooja developed severe pain in her lower back, joints and had fever and chills. These are symptoms of blood mismatch for which she was given four painkillers that night till the morning of April 1,’’ Doshi said.

According to him, among the painkillers administered was ‘Fantanil’, which should not be given to pregnant mothers. “Due to the complications, on April 1 morning, the hospital authorities took her for operation and conducted a caesarean,’’ he said.
The baby girl (Wani) was born with a birth weight of 750 gm and was immediately shifted to neonatal ICU where she was kept for three days, but finally succumbed.

Doshi added, “Due to the blood reaction, my wife suffered severe complications following which a caesarean section was performed in the seventh month of her pregnancy. Since the baby was too weak, it was also given blood twice and on the third day, it died. We informed the doctors at the hospital of the blood mismatch and they too admitted it and also confirmed reimbursing my Rs7 lakh I had put in to save my wife and baby, but in vain.’’

Doshi said that his wife was at the hospital for 28 days and was discharged on April 28. “Her father, due to this whole traumatic situation, suffered a major stroke and landed up in the ICU. I also went through a lot of emotional stress and trauma that affected my work. My wife since then is not keeping well and is
depressed,’’ he said.

“We lodged a complaint with the Hadapsar police station on April 29, but still they have not forwarded our case to the medical committee of the BJ Medical College,’’ he said.
