Evening walkers at Carter Road, Bandra, got an unexpected treat on Tuesday, as students from better known city schools enacted entertaining street plays with a social message.

As a part of their annual youth festival, Yuvana, students of RN Podar, Santa Cruz, participated in the street play contest where students from schools such as Vibgyor High, Goregoan, St. Gregorious, Chembur, Jamnabai School, Vile Parle, Rajhans School, Andheri etc participated.

"This is the first time we are organising a street play contest as part of our youth festival. It is not just a street play about a social issue. Students have to suggest a solution to the problem and also implement it on a small scale. They will be judged based on their success," said Avanita Bir, principal of RN Podar.

The event which kicked off on Tuesday will go on till November 6, when it will be judged at a finale. "The issues the students have highlighted includes illiteracy among the migrant population, cleanliness, traffic congestion, poverty and self reliance. Apart from this, the festival consists the usual fun and frolic," Bir added.

The nine participating teams are now working hard on generating a positive result that will win over the judges. "The winning team will be adjudged on their ability to suggest as well as execute creative, practical, valid and useful solutions," explained Bir.
